Although we are an indoor climbing gym, the sport of climbing is deeply rooted in nature and the outdoors. This sport would not be what it is without generations of dedicated outdoor enthusiasts and environmental conservationists.

We are proud to say that we are doing our best in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation. As a small, family-run business, it sometimes feels like what we are able to do just isn’t enough. But with your support, we can lead by example and encourage our community to take up some of these practices as well. Working together, we can make a difference.

We are committed to sustainability in the following ways:

Our Sustainability Practices

Climate and Carbon

  • We do not have air conditioning in the main gym as that uses a huge amount of energy. Instead we encourage natural air flow through the building with the use of open eaves and numerous fans, and whirly-birds. We have installed a roof-top sprinkler to cool the roof and therefore also help keep the inside of the gym cooler, while using a small amount of energy and a minimum amount of water necessary. We also have showers, smaller air-conditioned rooms, and free water to cool off. In the hot season, we may adjust our schedule to account for the hottest hours of the day.

  • We work to conserve energy by using all-LED lighting and keeping artificial lighting to a minimum. In fact, in the middle of the day, we often have some or all of the lights off and rely only on natural light. Most of our outdoor lighting is solar powered.

Ethical Purchasing

  • Much of our non-climbing gym equipment is second-hand, including furniture, toys, etc.

  • Many of our climbing holds are “factory seconds”, meaning that they are perfectly safe but have minor cosmetic blemishes and would otherwise have been thrown out.

  • Several of our climbing hold manufacturers use recycled or bio-based materials in their products.

  • Our staff T-shirts are made from recycled plastic bottles by Jong Stit (via Pattaya Print Space)

  • We support manufacturers that show a commitment to sustainability through international certification programs like bluesign(R).

Water

  • We regularly inspect our plumbing for leaks and repair leaking equipment

  • We collect rainwater and reuse it for non-potable uses like mopping the floor and washing holds.

  • We don’t sell plastic water bottles; instead we offer free water from our water cooler, which uses refillable bottles. The water is treated for drinking with reverse osmosis and UV treatment. If you prefer bottled water, we do offer refrigerated bottled water in reusable Singha glass water bottles that need to be returned to us after use.

Circularity and Waste

  • We endeavor to be a single-use plastic free zone as much as possible. We offer free water and reusable cups if you forget to bring your own reusable water bottle. We use only reusable tableware. If you must take a drink or snack to-go, we use compostable containers. We encourage you to enjoy your refreshments on site and/or bring your own to-go containers.

  • Most of the soft drinks we sell are in refillable glass bottles that are cleaned, refilled and reused. The rest are in aluminum cans that have a low environmental impact and are easy to recycle.

  • We recycle plastic, paper, and metal. Please use the appropriate containers when disposing of trash.

  • We collect hard-to-recycle items such as plastic films and plastic bags, and we send them to local partners for recycling. Feel free to bring in your (clean and dry) hard-to-recycle items and we can help you recycle them. Please no hazardous materials.

  • Our gym uniforms are made out of recycled plastic bottles.

Programming

  • We are planning to sponsor environmental programming and volunteer opportunities like a community garden, trash clean ups, etc.

  • We incorporate general outdoor and sustainability education into our classes.

Pollution and Biodiversity

  • We don’t use herbicides or other persistent or toxic pollutants in our gym or on the property. For pests such as termites, pigeons, mosquitoes, and rodents, we have an integrated pest management plan to minimize their impact. We use humane and non-lethal methods wherever possible. Where the use of chemical pesticides is unavoidable (such as for termites) we use targeted solutions such as bait traps rather than spraying.
